Trade mark owners becoming the target of email scams

Posted on February 10, 2025

Increasingly, trade mark owners are becoming the target of email scams.

These fraudulent emails often claim that your registered trade marks are being infringed by a third party and the sender invites you to use their services to urgently file new trade mark applications. These scam emails falsely purport to be from registered patent and/or trade mark attorneys. The emails contain false information and are intended to mislead you.

Fraudulent emails using reasons other than infringement to urge the recipients to immediately file new trade marks are also common.

Further information regarding fraudulent emails is available from IP Australia’s website, which is available here.

We encourage all business and IP owners to treat any suspicious emails with caution. If you have any concerns, please contact our IP team, who can assist with verifying the legitimacy of any communications you have received.
